Drinking water reservoirs need preventive periodical cleaning every six months. But, the waterproofing systems limitations shall be respected. Most times they are in contact with water and do not bear vigorous or abrasive cleaning. The fact that many cleaning companies, superintendents and users in general are not well prepared and misinformed about the correct disinfection and cleaning procedures of the waterproofed areas, may cause a series of losses and damages to the waterproofing systems, several times placing the onus of the losses in the hands of the product suppliers and labor work. Following, you have some tips to keep your reservoir always clean without causing damages to the waterproofing system.
Drain the reservoir.
1. Perform the cleaning only with plenty of clean water, soft hair brushes and brooms. Do not use steel brushes or with rigid bristles. Never use soap, detergent or any other chemical product (pure or diluted) directly over the waterproofing, because they may be deposited on the reservoir walls and later on in the stocked water, as well as promote chemical attack on the waterproofing (depending on the product and concentration used).
2. After washing, fill up the reservoir and add 1 liter of chlorine bleach for each 1000 liters of water in the reservoir.
3. Keep this solution in the reservoir for at least 2 hours. This procedure will be enough to disinfect the reservoir.
4. Drain the water opening all the water usage points of the residence. This procedure will also promote the disinfection of the piping.
5. Do not use this water either for consumption (drinking, washing and food preparation) or for personal hygiene.
OBSERVATIONS:
SPECIFIC CASES OF RESERVOIRS THAT MAY OR SHALL SUFFER ABRASIVE CLEANING (EX. Hospital, clinics, laboratories, etc.) shall be waterproofed with compatible systems, such as epoxy resin based material, or shall receive mechanical protection over the waterproofing.
