How to avoid cracks on the coatings of waterproofed base plates
The appearance of cracks and detachment on baseboard where there was waterproofing, notably in the system with asphalt blanket, is very common after some time the work is done. The presence of the asphalt blanket creates a separating element between the substrate and the coating final mortar; there is a strong tendency of coating detachment which is over the blanket. However, by performing the adequate constructive details, this abnormality may be 100% avoided. Structuring sreens of the mechanical protection shall be adopted, but its correct fixation and positioning in the mortar interior shall be observed. Below you will find important tips to eliminate this problem definitely.
Surface preparation
1. Provide a necking for waterproofing inlay with 4c thickness and minimum height of 30 cm above the finished floor.
2. You may have this necking, using less blocks on the baseboards line.
3. Regularize the surface with cement mortar and sand, trace 1:3, and minimum thickness of 1cm..
4. Structural blocks do not need regularization, as long as all the settlement areas empty spaces are filled.
5. Leave the last 5 to 10 cm without primer for the mechanical fixation of the mechanical protection structuring screen.
Application of the blanket
Rise the blanket that comes from the horizontal plan in 10 cm.
Cut the baseboard strip in the project height + 10 cm for the overlapping towards the horizontal plan.
WE RECOMMEND PERFORMING THE BASEBOARD WITH BLANKETS WITH SUPERFICIAL FINISHING IN SAND (external face) OR BURN THE POLYETHYLENE OF THE BLANKET WITH TORCH WARM FLAME.
Armored mechanical protection
- Perform the closed spot mortar with cement, and sand, trace 1:3, with acrylic adhesive, DENVERFIX CHAPISCO or apply glue mortar layer with a dented float.
- Fix the metallic or plastic screen, mechanically, above the waterproofing, over the 10 cm where the primer was not applied.
- Perform the mechanical protection.
IMPORTANT:
THE MECHANICAL PROTECTION STRUCTURING SCREEN SHALL BE PLACED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE MORTAR.
MORTAR THICKNESS > 3 CM SHALL RECEIVE TWO SCREENS. (ONE SCREEN IS RECOMMENDED AT EVERY 3 CM)
NEVER GLUE THE SCREEN DIRECTLY OVER THE BLANKET WITH HOT ASPHALT.
DO NOT GLUE THE SCREEN OVER THE BLANKET WITH PIECES OF THE BLANKET ITSELF.
USE SPACERS IF NECESSARY, TO GUARANTEE THAT THE SCREEN IS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE MORTAR.
